The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide is a practical resource for the increasing number of artists, makers, writers and other creatives working freelance in Scotland today.

It was created to fill an information gap for creative freelancers to understand their rights and best practices in avoiding and addressing difficult situations.

“The nature of freelancing – often remote, often isolated, with no HR department or workplace union to help you - can make you feel that when things go wrong, it’s simply tough luck. It’s difficult to advocate for yourself and discouraging to sift through pages of government information to try and find out what your rights really are. Even for those of us who’ve been freelancing for a long time, the barriers can feel huge.”

	In Their Own Time
READ IT ONLINE in collaboration with Cécile Ménard and Lena WånggrenChallenging conventional funding structures to include intersectionally underrepresented casulised academics.&#38;nbsp;
This project shares the stories of eight insecurely employed academics. I met with each of them to document their “own time,” and tell their stories through comics. Each chapter features a short comic alongside live drawings from our meetings.&#38;nbsp;
An accessible website

This project exists in print and online. You can read it outside UK working hours (in your own time!). The website was developed by The University of Edinburgh’s Interactive Content team (Stewart Lamb Cromar, Jacqueline Aim, David Buik). Read about the process of making an accessible website here.

	Kathleen
When I arrived here originally, I thought I would never leave...In 1986, Kathleen Allan moved herself and the 100 animals of her animal sanctuary to the isolated island of Inchkeith. Dogs, cats, chickens, donkeys, goats, geese, sheep, a pig and a pony all called the island their home. Over the five years that Kathleen lived there, she was the subject of public and media attention, attending to visitors both welcome and unwelcome.Through newspaper archives, interviews and explorations of the island, we pieced together the story of her time there. This is a collaboration with Sarah Lippett, the other half of Onion Press.&#38;nbsp;

	Commissioned by Out of the Blueprint for the exhibition Walk Don’t Walk.&#38;nbsp;
“Walk Don’t Walk is an exhibition of diverse new work by 19 artists, comic makers and illustrators, each pushing the limits of RISO production. 

Printed at the Out of the Blueprint&#38;nbsp;studio in the historic Drill Hall, the artwork forms part of an installation by our fellow studio holders, architects &#38;amp; designers&#38;nbsp;Biomorphis, filling the Drill Hall with a huge RISO machine-inspired structure.

Featuring everything from narrative illustration to genre-bending artwork, this exhibition is a vital and vibrant snapshot of contemporary Scottish creativity.”

	Justice, Safety and Support
This illustrated report is a summary of research on the new domestic abuse law (the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018).&#38;nbsp;
Thank you to 22 children, young people and adults who generously shared their stories and experiences in this research.
This report was co-designed with 8 children and young people from Glasgow East Women’s Aid (GEWA) and in consultation with the Scottish Women’s Aid Survivors Reference Group, none of whom were participants in the research project. They helped design the leaflet and summarise important research findings.

	The Story So Far


The Bairns Hoose was set up to&#38;nbsp;support and help make things

better for children, young&#38;nbsp;people and their families after&#38;nbsp;they are harmed or abused.


This document is a learning&#38;nbsp;summary about the first year&#38;nbsp;of the North Strathclyde Bairns&#38;nbsp;Hoose, a building and a new&#38;nbsp;way of professionals working&#38;nbsp;together to support children.


I designed and illustrated this report to create a friendly, approchable document.
 This report design was commissioned by The University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Children First.
